Immersion composition is a songwriting process in which the participant attempts to shake off their stifling self-criticism by writing very very fast. It's a counterintuitive fact that the ideas coming out of immersion composition are really fresh and vital, and this has become my standard 'brainstorm' process to generate new song ideas. Check out the Immersion Composition Society (www.ics-hub.org), and the splinter group I'll be writing with in 2013 (www.facebook.com/12in12x12). Thank you to Nicholas Dobson and Michael Mellender for lighting this fire in the early aughts and to Jim Mendola for bringing more songwriters together in a long-distance format with 12in12x12.
